Whispers of a Wanderer

30 March 2025

"Ugadi, also known as Yugadi, marks the beginning of a new 'Yuva,' Era, or Year.

It falls on 'Chaitra Shuddha Padyami,' the first day of the bright half of the Indian month of Chaitra.
Lunar calendars follow a 60-year cycle, with the new year commencing on Ugadi, specifically 'Chaitra Shuddha Padyami.'
Chaitra is the name of the first month, and Shuddha Padyami signifies the first day of the 15-day lunar cycle.

After completing 60 years, the calendar initiates a new cycle.

Ugadi's timing is based on Bhāskara's lunar calculations. It begins at sunrise immediately following the first new moon after the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north at the spring equinox and enters the First Point of Aries.

This day is the New Year's Day for the people of the Deccan region of India.

While Andhra Pradesh and Telangana use the term 'Ugadi' and Karnataka uses 'Yugadi,'
Maharashtra observes the same festival on the same day as 'Gudi Padwa.' Similarly, the Marwari of Rajasthan celebrate 'Thapna,' the Sindhis celebrate 'Cheti Chand,' and the Manipuris celebrate 'Sajibu Nongma Panba.' Further, Baisakhi in Punjab, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, and Nyepi in Bali and Indonesia also coincide with this period.

A significant part of Ugadi is 'Ugadi pachchadi,' a dish made of new jaggery, raw mango pieces, neem flowers, and new tamarind, symbolizing the diverse experiences of life through six distinct tastes:
* Salty (Uppu)
* Sweet (Thithippu)
* Sour (Pullippu)
* Hot/Spicy (Uraippu)
* Bitter (Kasappu)
* Astringent (Thuvarppu - the taste of plantain flower)
Essentially, this dish signifies the acceptance of all life's flavors and experiences, understanding them as a result of our past Karma.
By embracing this truth, we shift from 'reacting' to 'proactively' investing in good Dharmic Karma (through thoughts, words, and deeds) to shape our future.
This is the 'free will' bestowed upon humans as an evolved species in this Madhyaloka.

Wishing abundant blessings of creation to all on this Ugadi day.
