Astronomical View of Jupiter

Astronomical View of Jupiter
Fifth planet from the Sun.
Largest planet in the Solar System (about 11 times Earth’s diameter).
A gas giant (like Saturn).

Atmosphere:
Mostly hydrogen (≈90%) and helium (≈10%), with traces of methane, ammonia, water vapor, and other compounds.

Cloud Layers: Ammonia crystals (upper clouds), ammonium hydrosulfide (middle), and water ice/liquid (lower).

Core:
Possibly a rocky/metallic core surrounded by metallic hydrogen, though still debated.

Famous Great Red Spot: A massive storm lasting for centuries.

Strong magnetic field, many moons (95 confirmed, including Ganymede, Europa, Io, Callisto).

Emits more heat than it receives from the Sun (due to internal contraction and radiation).

Astrological View of Jupiter (Bṛhaspati / Guru)
Known as the Guru (teacher) or Bṛhaspati in Vedic astrology.
Guru is Ocean and Water since its composition of 90% hydrogen.

Represents knowledge, wisdom, expansion, wealth, prosperity, dharma, and spiritual growth.

Considered a benefic planet (favorable, unless afflicted).

Zodiac Influence
Own signs: Sagittarius (Dhanus) and Pisces (Meena).
Exalted in Cancer (Karka).
Debilitated in Capricorn (Makara).

Its 12-year orbital period around the Sun corresponds to its stay of about 1 year in each zodiac sign—thus used for long-term predictions (Guru transit or Guru Peyarchi).

Seen as a planet that brings expansion, growth, and fortune, just as Jupiter’s size expands beyond measure in the solar system.

Astronomically, Jupiter is a giant hydrogen–helium planet with storms, a strong magnetic field, and many moons.
Hence Moon as his first and favourite student (pradhama sishya)

Astrologically, Jupiter is the Guru, guiding with wisdom, wealth, and dharma. Its astronomical vastness and protective role in the solar system (shielding Earth from asteroids) parallel its astrological role as a benevolent protector and teacher.
Salutations to the Celestial Protector Teacher !
