Thrift…
Thrift…
The diversity of scavengers and the ecological principle of “thrift” (recycling or non-waste) that keeps ecosystems balanced.
What Are Scavengers?
Scavengers are organisms that feed on dead and decaying plants or animals rather than hunting or grazing on the living.
They are the natural recyclers of ecosystems — returning nutrients to the soil, cleaning the environment, and preventing disease spread.
Scavenger Species in Nature
Insects (Detritivores and Scavengers)
These are the first responders to decomposition.
• Carrion beetles (Silphidae) – lay eggs on dead animals; larvae consume flesh.
• Blowflies (Calliphoridae) – their maggots feed on decaying meat.
• Flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) – similar role, vital in decomposition.
• Ants (Formicidae) – scavenge dead insects and animal matter.
• Termites – feed on decaying wood and plant material, recycling carbon.
• Dung beetles (Scarabaeinae) – recycle animal waste into soil nutrients.
Significance: They initiate decomposition, aerate soil, and speed up nutrient recycling.
Birds
Birds play a visible and dramatic role in carrion removal.
• Vultures (Old World: Gyps, Neophron; New World: Cathartes) – primary avian scavengers.
• Crows and ravens (Corvidae) – omnivorous scavengers, adaptable to urban and wild habitats.
• Kites and eagles – sometimes scavenge dead animals when hunting is scarce.
• Seagulls – coastal scavengers; feed on fish waste and organic debris.
Significance: Birds prevent epidemics by rapidly clearing carcasses and controlling disease vectors like anthrax or rabies bacteria that breed on carrion.
Animals (Non-Avian Vertebrates)
Many carnivores scavenge opportunistically.
• Hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) – true scavengers but also skilled hunters; can digest bone.
• Jackals – small scavengers feeding on remains left by large predators.
• Foxes, wild dogs, wolves – all scavenge when prey is scarce.
• Monitor lizards – feed on carcasses and eggs in tropical regions.
• Crocodiles – often consume dead or weak animals in rivers.
Significance:
They act as “sanitation workers,” preventing putrefaction and spreading nutrients across the food web.
Mammals (including omnivores)
Many mammals are facultative scavengers (scavenge occasionally).
• Bears – eat carrion during lean seasons.
• Tigers and lions – will scavenge kills of other predators.
• Rats and dogs – urban scavengers that recycle organic waste.
• Humans (historically and culturally) – in traditional societies, practiced resource thrift by reusing and recycling natural materials.
Significance: They link higher trophic levels and minimize waste in the ecosystem.
The Concept of “Thrift” and Ecological Balance
Thrift in Ecology = Efficient Recycling of Energy and Matter
• Every ecosystem operates on closed-loop cycles: matter and nutrients are reused continuously.

“Linga - the ellipsoidal” — the shape of the cosmic egg.”
Word origin and form
“ellipsoidal” — the scientific term derived from ellipse — meaning oval or egg-like in three dimensions, like a stretched sphere.
The ellipsoidal shape of the cosmic egg”- ‘ANDA’ from which comes the words ‘Brahm-ANDA ’ and ‘Martha- ANDA’
The universe, shaped like a vast, glowing oval — neither perfectly round nor angular, but balanced in eternal curvature.
Siva on the form of Linga represents tbis eternal truth, in the fork of Purusha. Seated in the Yoni - the Cosmic Womb of Prakruthi - Shakti. all of creation happens.
Cosmologically,
Across many traditions, the Cosmic Egg (often called Brahmāṇḍa in Sanskrit, meaning “Brahma’s egg”) represents the origin of the universe — the womb from which space, time, and matter emerge.
Its ellipsoidal shape symbolises. Continuity and balance — between the infinite (circle/sphere) and the finite (line/axis).
The Dynamic symmetry of expansion and contraction like breathing.
Containment of all creation — from the seed of potential to the manifested cosmos.
The cosmos hatched from an eliphoidal egg — neither round nor flat,
but curved with purpose,
where silence folded upon itself
to birth light, space, and song.
