Restriction of Entry for women between a certain age group at Sabarimala was based on few humane considerations.
1. It was a time when a Vrita of a Mandala (48 days) was mandatory which women of the said age group could not have completed without a break to the vrita.
2. Those days the women of the house played an important role in the Vrita of the men of the house who were undertaking the pilgrimage to Sabarimala. It was similar to going to Kasi. One was not sure of how long would it take for them to return or for that matter return at all as it was a journey through hills and forests and you are at the mercy of the lord and nature.
3. So as a social security, even if something happened to the Man, the woman was there for the children and their future.
4. The children under the age and the elders above the age were always accompanied during the pilgrimage.
5. The intensity of Bhakthi, fathom of faith and the piety of a place of worship has a direct bearing on the hardship of access, fitness to endure travel, the risks associated with it and the surrender of the mind all directly destined the Darshan.
These were compassionate considerations associated with such pilgrimages where those who facilitated the pilgrimage though their dedicated service were no less blessed than those who undertook the travel and had the darshan.
Salutations to a tradition which valued these considerations.
